Kergan Edwards-Stout: Please Defriend Me
Please defriend me.
If you plan to vote for Mitt Romney, you are putting a nail into my civil rights coffin, and I’d rather not have friends who think I deserve anything less than equal treatment under the law.
Can I say briefly here that although the personal stakes are not as high for me, the moral calculus is exactly the same? As a straight, white, upper class gent, it’s tempting for me to sit out of discussions about political attacks on women, homosexuals, etc. I usually indulge that temptation, mostly because I’m a comedian and a stoic.
But when someone in power talks about women’s health like women are children, they don’t just piss off women, they piss off me. And when someone in power tries to score points by throwing gay rights on the barbeque, they’re not just abandoning the support of gay people, they’re abandoning mine.
Maybe it’s just the way things are discussed in an election season, but it’s not bigots v. the oppressed. It’s bigots v. non-bigots.
